Labour Day in Victoria is a public holiday held on the second Monday in March to commemorate the 8-hour workday movement. In 2026, it falls on Monday, 9 March.  

It marks the 1856 victory of Melbourne stonemasons who secured the 8-hour workday.  

Public transport runs on a Sunday/public holiday timetable; most retail stores open with reduced hours
